Fossil Point

I am in Green River, UT for a few days for the purpose of exploring the San Rafael Swell. This afternoon, I drove to Fossil Point, the site of dinosaur bones that date as far back as the Jurassic Era 145 million years ago. Here are the remnants of what I believe are a couple of fossilized bones that I found...

Carbon dating suggests these bones are almost as old as my cousin Chris

I, intentionally, did not stand too long in any one spot lest a young archaeologist mistakenly classify me as an "old fossil" that needed to be covered in plaster of Paris and shipped to a museum (I hate when that happens).

Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo

Tonight, I attended the Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo at the Old Spanish Trail Arena. It was a fun, family affair that reminded me of growing up in a small town in the south. Here's a video of the winner of the bronc riding event...

They even had an old fashion carnival next door...

Lower Gray Canyon

After watching several hundred UTVs leave the staging area this morning, I drove over to Green River to learn more about the San Rafael Swell area. In talking to one of the locals, I was told the road that follows the river north through Lower Gray Canyon was a scenic drive and there would be a good chance that I would see big horn sheep. Much to my surprise and delight, the sheep were there and I was able to get within 30 feet of them...

Rally on the Rocks

The Rally on the Rocks starts today and just about every make and model of UTV/SXS are present. You would be hard put to find more side-by-sides in one place than are in Moab this week. And, apparently, bigger is better as I am seeing a lot of 1000s and four seaters with the Polaris RZR XP 1000 leading the pack...

Mack Is Back

Mack and Joleen, who I rode with last year, are back in Moab for the big Rally On The Rocks and they brought their wild and crazy friends from Quartzsite with them. Today, we rode Fins & Things and Hells Revenge which, in my opinion, is a great way to introduce first time Moab riders to the "slickrock".

Mack's expression says it all

At the end of a long day's ride, there are not too many things better then sharing the experience with friends over dinner...

Lastly, Becky took a great video of me going up Hells Gate...

The guys with the RZR XPs and 30 inch tires are back (click here to view last year's post) and today, we rode Steel Bender which has some fun challenges...

Important Safety Tip

It occurred to me that given where I have ridden lately, I should have an effective means to alert others when I am in trouble. Here's the latest addition to the RZR...

Team Calf Roping

One of the nice things about camping next to the Spanish Trail Arena is I can walk out the back gate and attend any of their public events. Today, it was professional team calf roping where the object is for one rider to lasso the calf's head and then a second rider to lasso its rear feet, all in the shortest amount of time. Unfortunately, the event was indoors where there not enough light for me to get sharp, focused pictures so I have to go with what I got...

They sure do start 'em young...

Of course, the best part of the event was checking out the cowgirls...
